Illinois State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle rollover crash that closed all southbound lanes of Interstate 255 in Madison County on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Illinois State Police Troop 8, troopers responded at approximately 3:55 p.m. to a report of a single-vehicle rollover crash with an occupant ejected on Interstate 255 southbound north of Illinois Route 162 in Pontoon Beach.
Police said three people were injured in the crash. One of those individuals later died from their injuries.
The crash prompted significant traffic disruptions. At approximately 4:01 p.m., the two right southbound lanes were closed while traffic was directed onto the left shoulder. By approximately 4:10 p.m., all southbound lanes were closed as investigators processed the scene.
Preliminary information from Illinois State Police indicates the vehicle changed from the right lane to the left lane before the driver lost control. The vehicle crossed the center median, rolled and came to rest in the southbound lanes.
The driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, while a front-seat passenger refused medical treatment. A backseat passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died from their injuries. Southbound lanes of Interstate 255 remain closed as the investigation continues.
