One man’s combat to free his brothers

Greater than a month after Hamas militants kidnapped greater than 200 Israelis, Liran Berman nonetheless would not know if his twin brothers are alive.

Berman awoke at 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 7 in his dwelling in Zichron Yaakov, in northern Israel, to the sound of sirens and instantly texted his mother and father and three brothers within the Kfar Aza kibbutz to verify they had been locked of their protected rooms – normal protocol for the residents of the farming neighborhood about three miles from the Gaza Strip.

“Within the early morning of Saturday, we thought it was only a missile assault,” Berman advised USA TODAY. “It will be over in an hour or two, and we might proceed with our lives.”
