Forget Squid Game, it would now appear that Orania vs Panyaza Lesufi is this month’s biggest blockbuster drama. The Gauteng Education MEC has gone back for a second bite of the cherry, and sharing his strong views on the whites-only town earlier this week. Put simply, the politician wants the enclave GONE.
Panyaza Lesufi says Orania ‘must be rejected’
In between the MEC’s verbal blasts, the CEO of the Orania Movement blasted Lesufi for his own ‘failures in office’. The trade of insults has kept South Africans glued to social media, and sure enough, Panyaza posted this on Wednesday:
“It is a whites-only enclave. Africans aren’t welcome unless they agree that whites are superior. It’s nonsense we must not tolerate. Like we disagreed with those who wanted to drive settlers to the sea, we must reject Orania.” | Panyaza Lesufi
Existence of Orania causing division in SA
The right to self-determination is a tricky principle to pin down in South Africa. Given our diverse melting pot of cultures and backgrounds, various claims to land ownership and individual governance have emerged over the years.
But Lesufi is desperate to ‘reject Orania’, and call time on the 27-year-old settlement. He went on Power FM earlier this afternoon, to really hammer home his anti-separatist views. The ANC representative linked the Western Cape independence movement to the town, and said it was nothing more than a ‘modernised version of apartheid’.
‘It betrays the rest of the country’ – Panyaza Lesufi
“South Africa belongs to all those who live here. If we allow Orania, we betray the rest of the country. One part of the country cannot have its own currency and its own flag. We cannot have two states. And now look what they are asking for, they want the Western Cape to have independence.”
“We can’t have a section of society that wants you to accept that whites, or any other race, are superior. We are all fellow South Africans, we should build this nation together. But some people just want to modernise apartheid.”
