Orlando Pirates are still smarting from their CAF Confederation Cup final defeat to RSB Berkane but how bad have things been for them in the last decade?

The Buccaneers made their second CAF Confederation Cup final appearance in eight years as they faced RSB Berkane of Morocco on Saturday.

And while Pirates created better goalscoring chances to win the match in regulation time, they couldn’t convert them into goals.

The match had to go to extra time with Berkane opening the scoring before Thembinkosi Lorch leveled matters to force the game into penalties.

Ultimately, Pirates lost 5-4 on penalties, and this was also their third CAF inter-club final defeat after the 2013 CAF Champions League and the 2015 CAF Confed Cup final losses.

HOW MANY CUP FINALS HAVE ORLANDO PIRATES LOST IN THE LAST DECADE?

Pirates have been to 11 Cup finals, including the 2013 CAF Champions League final that they played against Al Ahly both home and away, and eventually lost.

The Sea Robbers would then lose both the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout Cup finals to the now-defunct Platinum Stars in the 2013-14 season.

The two Cup final losses were followed by the Nedbank Cup final win in the same season where they beat Bidvest Wits in 2014.

The next final was the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup against Etoile du Sahel whom Pirates lost to in the two-legged final.

The 2014-15 season also saw Pirates reach the MTN8 final where they played and lost 1-0 to arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs who were, at the time, coached by Stuart Baxter.

Pirates then reached back-to-back Nedbank Cup finals in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons but they lost both finals to SuperSport United.

Then came the 2018-19 season when Pirates made it to the final of the Telkom Knockout Cup final but despite being strong favourites to beat Baroka, they were stunned by Wedson Nyirenda’s men on penalties.

Pirates then ended the trophy drought with the MTN8 triumph at the expense of Bloemfontein Celtic at the start of the 2020-21 season under the tutelage of Josef Zinnbauer.

Zinnbauer was sacked at the start of the 2021-22 season, and with Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids in charges, Pirates lost the CAF Confederation Cup final to RSB Berkane.
