In recent years, especially during the nationwide lockdown, India has witnessed a rise in the popularity of Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms, with Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ Hotstar leading the way. However, with the rise of these platforms, the issue of vulgarity and obscenity in their content has led to a growing debate about the need for regulation. Speaking on the subject, once again, Union Broadcasting and Information Minister Anurag Thakur warned OTT platforms against using obscene content and abusive language in the name of creativity.
“OTT platforms were given freedom for creativity, not obscenity,” says I&B minister Anurag Thakur; he talks about censorship complaints
It all happened during a press conference held on Sunday. In a video, shared by Anurag Thakur himself, he stated: “The process so far is that the producer has to resolve the complaints received at the first level. They resolve 90 to 92 percent of complaints by making the necessary changes. The next level of complaint resolution is at your association level, where most complaints are resolved.”
He also added: “At the last level, it is the level of government, where action is taken at the level of departmental committees, in accordance with current regulations. But somewhere the complaints have started to rise in recent days and the department is taking it very seriously. If a change is necessary, we are willing to consider it.”
The minister continued: “Abusive language in the name of creativity will not be tolerated. The government takes seriously reports of the increase in abusive and obscene content on OTT platforms. If there is a need to make any changes to the rules regarding this, the ministry is willing to consider it. These platforms were given freedom for creativity, not obscenity. And when someone crosses a limit, then abuse or rudeness in the name of creativity cannot be accepted at all. Regardless of the necessary measures that must be taken in this regard, the government will not back down.”

On the same note, it is worth mentioning here that the Delhi High Court on March 7 upheld an FIR search warrant against The Viral Fever (TVF) and its actor while calling on the government to take steps to verify the language Of content. of OTT platforms. However, the court also stated that the order to register FIR in the present case does not include an order to arrest any of the defendants/petitioners.
