He might not have experience on his side but young off-spinner Amar Virdi remains confident of cutting through the competition and earning a place in England team for the three-Test series against the West Indies beginning on July 8.

The 21-year-old has featured in only 23 first-class games in his career and will have to beat more experienced spinners like Jack Leach, Dom Bess, Matt Parkinson and Moeen Ali to get into the Test squad.

“Obviously I’m here so I want to be playing Test cricket whenever that comes, so I’m going to keep on trying my hardest to make sure that I’m playing,” the Surrey spinner, who was included in England’s 30-man squad earlier this month, said on Friday.

“I don’t really try to impress as such – I want to do my own thing and be who I am. That’s what I want to show people and show people what I’m capable of doing, rather than doing other things or try to forcefully show my skills.”

Virdi said he is focussed on working hard to get into the squad for the opening Test.

“I definitely do want to be playing in the first Test match, or at least be in the squad. If I didn’t want to do that I probably shouldn’t be here.

Ollie Pope A then-and-now picture he posted in Twitter, featuring his Surrey teammates and friends Sam Curran (left), Ryan Patel and Amar Virdi.

I’m very proud of myself that I’ve got to this stage. The next stage is about pushing for a Test place, so whenever that does happen I’m going to keep working hard.”

Virdi, who has taken 69 wickets in his 23 first class matches at an average of 28.78, says his strength lies in his aggression as he is always looking for wickets.

“I think you’ve got to be aggressive and you’ve got to be looking to take wickets. Maybe the pitches aren’t always going to be suited to you but as a spinner even if you are looking to keep it tight, my eyes are always on taking wickets regardless.

“Obviously being young, I’m still learning my skills and getting better at my skills, so you will bowl the odd loose ball or you might not get six balls in the perfect space. But I think you’ll bowl a lot more wicket-taking deliveries and that’s what makes you dangerous: when a batsman knows that you can get them out on any wicket.”

If he makes it to the squad, Virdi will become only the third Sikh to represent England after Monty Panesar and Ravi Bopara. He says Panesar has been a role model as he is also state-educated and spent his formative years at the Guru Nanak Sikh Academy in Hayes.

“Growing up I watched Graeme Swann and Monty and that was very inspirational to me. Obviously with Monty as well because he looks very similar to me, especially being from the community that I am,” he said.

“We’re in a minority in a lot of industries and to see someone progressing and doing well in the field you’re in really motivates you and shows you that you can do it.”

In a shocking incident, the body of a Covid-19 victim was carried on a JCB earthmover to the cremation ground by municipal staff in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district on Friday.

The incident took place in Udayapuram area of Palasa municipality after the 72-year-old died of Covid-19.

The PPE-clad municipal workers placed the dead body covered in a cloth on the front portion of the machine and drove to the cremation ground.

Following the incident, District Collector J Nivas suspended Palasa Municipal Commissioner C Nagender Kumar and the sanitary inspector. He also ordered a probe into the incident.

The man, himself a former employee in the municipality, died at home following illness. He had undergone Covid-19 test during door-to-door drive by the local authorities. The report of the test also came around the time of his death.

As neighbours put pressure on the family to remove the body, the deceased’s granddaughter, a government volunteer in the town, called the municipal staff to shift the body for cremation.

Palasa is already in the grip of Covid-19 fear and traders in this town and other parts of the district are voluntarily observing the lockdown.

Meanwhile, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President and former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu tweeted that he was uterly shocked to see the deceased bodies of coronavirus victims wrapped in plastic & transported on JCBs and tractors. “They deserve respect & dignity even in death. Shame on YS Jagan government for this inhumane treatment of the mortal remains,” he tweeted along with a video.

Hopping mad driver leaves assailant without a leg to stand on

0

An e-hailing driver operating in the Cape Town suburb of Philippi East was hopping mad when a man purporting to be a customer tried to hijack him this week.

But instead of meekly surrendering to his assailant, he fought back hard and left the would-be-hijacker without a leg to stand on after riding over him with his car.

‘Customer’ booked a 35km ride to Somerset West

The Daily Voice, a tabloid newspaper circulating in the Western Cape, reports that the driver, identified as 33-year-old Mulisa Nemathaga, received a request via his ride-hailing app for a customer who wanted to go from Philippi East to Somerset West, a distance of about 35km.

After phoning the ‘customer’ to confirm that he wanted to book a ride for a destination so far away, Nemathaga arrived in Philippi East for the pickup.

Driver fought attackers and retrieved his car keys

But the customer then opened his door and grabbed his cellphone while other attackers attempted to get the vehicle’s keys. Determined not to be a tame taxi driver, he fought the man, who had a firearm, and retrieved his keys.

He then chased his assailant with his car and bumped him against a wall as the other would-be attackers fled the scene, the Daily Voice said. In doing so “the ‘jacker was left bloodied and with a broken foot, the bones visibly showing,” the newspaper reported.

Would-be hijacker known to other e-hailing drivers

By now hopping mad and with his attacker bloodied and bleeding, Nemathaga took a photo of him and posted it on Facebook. It turned out that the man was known to other e-hailing drivers and had allegedly been involved in similar attacks.

“I dealt with him,” Nemathaga told the newspaper. “I am from Joburg, I do not play around.”

W. Cape government called for caution last year

Last year the Western Cape Government called on Uber, Bolt and drivers of other e-hailing companies to practice caution when operating in parts of Cape Town.

The provincial minister of community safety, Albert Fritz, asked the companies to “take measures to ensure the safety of drivers and their customers”.

The statement recommended drivers be “cautious in hotspot areas which include Govan Mbeki Road in Philippi, Bristol and Sheffield Roads in Browns Farm, Klipfontein Road, Miller Road and Eisleben roads in Nyanga and Crossroads”.

Pakistan to reopen Kartarpur Corridor for Sikh pilgrims

As places of worship open up across the world, Pakistan prepares to reopen the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for all Sikh pilgrims, says FM Qureshi. Photo: File

Foreign   Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on   Saturday   said   Pakistan will reopen the Kartarpur Corridor for all Sikh pilgrims on June 29.

“As places of worship open up across the world, Pakistan prepares to reopen the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for all Sikh pilgrims, conveying to the Indian side our readiness to reopen the corridor on 29 June 2020, the occasion of the death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh,” Qureshi tweeted.

The Foreign Office in a statement said the Kartarpur Corridor was a true symbol of peace and religious harmony.

“This landmark initiative by the government of Pakistan has been immensely appreciated by the Sikh community all over the world including India. The first Guru of Sikhism, Baba Guru Nanak Saheb, had spent the last 18 years of his life in Kartarpur,” the Foreign Office added.

The Corridor was temporarily closed on March 16, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As the religious places are gradually opening up around the world, Pakistan has also made necessary arrangements to reopen Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for Sikh pilgrims,” it added.

Pakistan has invited India to work out necessary SOPs for reopening of the Corridor to ensure adherence to the health guidelines, the Foreign Office added.

Visit to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur had been suspended for Sikh pilgrims in April by Pakistan as the country battled the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this week, the country reopened the Wagah border between the two countries for three days to repatriate stranded Indians in Pakistan.

According to the interior ministry 748 Indians stranded in Pakistan due to the coronavirus lockdown were to return to their country in three phases.

In the first and second batches, 250 Indian nationals each were repatriated while the third batch was made up of the remaining 248 Indian nationals, the interior ministry said, adding the Indian nationals were in different cities of Pakistan.

Pakistan on March 19 had closed the Wagah Border in its bid to prevent the spread of the virus in the country.

Asserting that the government’s guiding light is the Constitution of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the government does not discriminate between faith, gender, caste, creed or language and is led by the desire to empower 130 crore Indians.

Addressing the 90th birthday celebrations of Rev Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan in Pathanamthitta of Kerala via video conference, he said, “We have taken decisions not from comfortable government offices in Delhi but after feedback from people on the ground.” “It is this spirit that ensured every Indian has access to a bank account,” he said.

The prime minister asserted that Government of India does not discriminate between faith, gender, caste, creed or language. “We are guided by the desire to empower 130 crore Indians and our guiding light is the Constitution of India,” he told the gathering.

Referring to the fight against novel coronavirus, Modi said that due to nationwide lockdown, a people-driven fight and several initiatives taken by the government, India is much better placed than many other nations. He said India’s recovery rate is rising. The people-driven fight has given good results so far, Modi said, cautioning that people can’t let their guards down yet.

“In fact, we have to be even more careful now. Wearing masks, following social distancing, avoiding crowded places remain important,” he said.

The prime minister said the Mar Thoma Church is closely linked with the noble ideals of Saint Thomas, the Apostle of Lord Christ. It is with this spirit of humility that the Mar Thoma Church has worked to bring a positive difference in the lives of fellow Indians, he said.

They have done so much in areas such as healthcare and education, he said, adding that Joseph Mar Thoma has devoted his life for the betterment of the society and the nation. He has been particularly passionate about removal of poverty and women, the prime minister said.

The schools have been directed to make arrangements for downloading and issuing digitally signed mark sheets to the students. These digitally signed mark sheets will be acceptable for educational and employment purposes, as well. The Uttar Pradesh Board will first issue the digital mark sheets to the intermediate students so that students don’t face any difficulty in admission sessions.

This year, the UP Board high school and intermediate examinations were conducted between February 18 and March 6. A total of 56, 89, 622 students had registered for the High School and Intermediate Board exams and the board had made arrangements to install CCTV cameras at many examination centers to prevent malpractices.
