Two women were hospitalized early Saturday in Seattle after a car swerved into a closed section of highway and sped into a group of civil rights demonstrators, police said.
A 27-year-old man was taken into custody and faces multiple charges.
The car drove around a blockade vehicles around 1:40 a.m. before hitting the crowd in an incident caught on disturbing and graphic video. The video shows two figures being struck by a white Jaguar sedan and thrown into the air, landing hard on the pavement.
Summer Taylor, 24, and Diaz Love, 32, were each in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center’s intensive care unit, a spokeswoman told HuffPost.
Love had been live-streaming the demonstration, which was billed as “Black Femme March Takes I-5,†on her Facebook page when the car struck, ending her stream abruptly. In the moments before, people can be heard yelling “car†in increasingly panicked tones.Â
Sections of the highway have been frequently closed off because of protests, according to a local ABC affiliate. Â
Trooper Rick Johnson, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol, tweeted two photos of the car, which showed damage to its front grille and windshield.

The suspect was identified as Seattle resident Dawit Kelete, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press. He was taken into custody and faces multiple charges.Â
“At the very least, he is looking at vehicle assault charges, felony hit-and-run, but those could be upgraded depending on the progress of the investigation,†Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead said in an early morning news conference.
“We don’t know if it’s a targeted attack, but that remains the focus of our investigation,†Mead added.
Mead urged protesters to reconsider gathering on the highway, saying it is difficult to guarantee their safety.
The brutal incident comes two days after authorities shut down an area of Seattle that had been claimed by protesters as a police-free encampment dubbed the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone. The zone lasted nearly a month until a series of violent attacks ramped up pressure to dissolve it.

This article was originally published by Michael Coates onClean Fleet Report, a publication that gives its readers the information they need to move to cars and trucks with best fuel economy, including electric cars, fuel cells, plug-in hybrids, hybrids and advanced diesel and gasoline engines.
It’s only been five years since the last major redesign of the Ford F-150, not a long time historically in the truck world, but with competition heating up both in the traditional competitors and newcomers, Ford is pushing forward with the introduction of the all-new 2021 F-150, a remake of its best-selling and most lucrative model.
The goal of the introduction this week, hosted by Ford spokesperson Dennis Leary and featuring a variety of Ford employees and F-150 customers, was to show that Ford is well-aware that its industry-leading position (best-selling truck for the past 43 years) is not something assumed, but an achievement to be re-earned every year. The 2021 Ford F-150 has a very simple goal—maintain and expand that market lead for another year or two.
All-new F-150 Limited in Smoked Quartz Tinted Clearcoat.
Highlights of the introduction (some detail below) included the presentation of a new full hybrid model and confirmation that a full-electric version is coming. The other big takeaway is that electrification in a pickup take a significantly different form that in a sedan. In a truck application, the emphasis of a large battery is less on propulsion and zero emission miles than on providing a mobile power source for tools and toys.
Next year’s F-150, which will go on sale this fall, follows the typical pickup mold of offering a dizzying number of options in an attempt to provide a potential pickup for every possible buyer. The completely redesigned truck (every one of the aluminum exterior panel is new) will offer six engines, 13 different wheels and 11 grille options in a half-dozen trim levels.
Fuel economy focus
All-new F-150 Lariat in Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat.
Although no official fuel economy numbers are available, Ford pointed out that it was the most aerodynamic pickup the company has ever designed, employing grille shutters, a new automatically deploying air dam and new cab and tailgate geometry to reduce drag and reduce fuel consumption on all models.
The new hybrid F-150 will use an all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, augmented by a 35-kW/47-horsepower electric motor. A 10-speed transmission and 1.5 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery (mounted between the frame rails so it doesn’t take up any passenger or cargo space) complete the powertrain.
The all-electric F-150 will come in 2022, according to Ford COO Jim Farley. When it arrives, it will likely face several competitors, including the Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer, Tesla Cybertruck, Lordstown Endeavor, and Nikola Badger.
Electrification on the job
Back to the present, Ford sees electric power as another tool for the job. The 2021 F-150 will come up with up to 7.2 kilowatts (kW) of exportable power, enough to run a generator and a variety of power tools through 120-volt and/or 240-volt outlets.
Available 7.2-kilowatt Pro Power Onboard™ features four 120V 20A outlets and one NEMA L14-30R 240V 30A. The all-new F-150 features more exportable power than any light-duty full-size pickup, giving you the ability to use your truck as a mobile generator. It is available with three levels of electrical output depending on engine choice.
Inside Ford has added a variety of high-tech features that point out how mainstream the modern pickup has become. One clever addition is that, with a few quick shifts of hardware, the center console can become a desk big enough to hold a laptop. Above that center console half of the F-150 lineup will have 12.0-inch touchscreen displays, matching what’s becoming the standard for the segment. The display will come equipped with Sync4, the latest version of Ford’s infotainment system. Ten new advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are going to be available.
Recognizing the variety of uses a truck might undergo, Ford has designed the front seats to recline 180 degrees, so not only is the pickup and office, but also a bedroom. Under the backseat is a lockable storage unit for stashing away valuables or expensive tools.
The most list
What a pickup needs is a most list and Ford has drawn up a long one. The stated goal of the 2021 F-150 is to be able to tow the biggest load in its class, carry the heaviest payload, have the most horsepower and torque and also have the longest range.
Available Pro Trailer Backup Assist makes backing up a trailer as easy as turning a knob; the feature continues in the all-new F-150 and it is the only light-duty full-size pickup with this feature.
Don’t expect the competition to take this lying down, but Ford also had other news last week that went well beyond the news about the redesign of its best-selling product. The company laid out a goal of becoming of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 with three areas of focus that account for 95 percent of the companies CO2 emissions:
Vehicle use
Supply base
Facilities
On the vehicle side, it’s putting $11.5 billion through 2022 into the Mustang Mach-E, Transit Commercial and fully electric F-150. It expects all of its manufacturing plants to use 100 percent locally sourced renewable energy by 2035.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film “Dil Bechara†will release on streaming platform Disney + Hotstar on July 24.Â
Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput’s father K K Singh is not on Twitter, a source close to the family said on Saturday in response to the media reports claiming that he has demanded CBI inquiry into the actor’s death in a post on the social media platform. Rajput, 34, best known for films like “Kai Po Che!”, “MS Dhoni: The Untold Story” and “Chhichhore”, died on June 14 at his Bandra residence. “He (Singh) has out rightly denied existence of any such account and urged those behind such things to not create confusion in public,†the family source told PTI.
The source added that the family has released no statement related to Rajput after June 27, in which they announced initiatives to support aspiring talent in the field of cinema, sports and science. The family has also not given any media interviews or shared posts on social media. As per the reports, Singh posted on Twitter that his actor son’s death is a murder and some people are trying to project it as a suicide.

This playful 400-pound black bear enjoyed a dip in this 300-gallon wading pool at the Oregon Zoo in Portland.
Storyful
A black bear is gaining national attention for his summer walkabout that has taken him from Wisconsin to Illinois, perhaps in search of a mate.
The bear, named “Bruno,” crossed state lines and is still roaming, building a social media following along the way.A Facebook group, “Keeping Bruno Safe,†was created June 19 and has more than 46,000 members.
The bear has traveled about 400 miles and has recently been spotted in Missouri, according to several reports. Bruno crossed from Wisconsin into Illinois on June 10, then crossed into Iowa. He returned to Illinois in southern Rock Island County on June 18, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The Pike County (Illinois) Sheriff’s Department and IDNR helped the bear cross busy roads and interstate highways by blocking traffic.Â
Over 300 people gathered in northwest Henderson Countyin Illinois on Father’s Day weekend to watch, trail and harass the bear.
“Certainly, the more pressure is put on the bear, the more likely we’ll see an adverse outcome,†said Capt. Laura Petreikis of the Illinois Conservation Police, in a statement. “As is always the case, we want to ensure the safety of both people and animals. If we continue to see situations like we saw this past weekend, Conservation Police will issue tickets and make arrests to ensure the safety of both the public and the bear.â€
Locals also reported the bear was seen crossing the Mississippi River on June 30. Â
Stefanie Fitzsimons, district wildlife biologist of INDR, said the bear was likely passing through the state looking for a mate and urged onlookers to remain 100 yards away.Â
“For the most part, we’ve not seen conflicts between the public and bear until recently and, unfortunately, those conflicts were caused entirely by people,†Fitzsimons said in a press release.Â
“It’s a novelty to see a bear in Illinois, and people want to see it for themselves, but they must remember that the outcome for this bear – whether IDNR must step in and take action to protect public safety – is completely dependent on how the public react to it. If the bear is left alone, it can continue its journey safely on its own.â€Â
About 14.7%Â of Illinois is suitable for black bears, according to the IDNR, and sightings are rare. Only a handful of sightings have been reported in the past decade, according to the Outdoor Illinois Wildlife Journal.Â
Bruno likely got his name from the late animal actor, born in Wisconsin in 1962. The bear starred in “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean,” “Gentle Ben” and “Mara of the Wilderness,” according to IMDb. He died in 1981 in California.
The IDNR is monitoring Bruno in partnership with local law enforcement and through tips sent to the wildlife department by concerned citizens who have spotted the bear.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency teams
A man in his 20s has been shot dead in north London.
Emergency services were called to Roman Way in Islington at 15:20 BST and found the man with gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, close to Pentonville Prison, shortly afterwards, the Met Police said.
The man’s next of kin have been informed but no-one has been arrested. Officers have cordoned off the Westbourne Estate area as they investigate.
The force said it was too early to say whether the shooting was linked to the prison, which is one of the country’s oldest and busiest jails and houses a men’s prison and a young offender institution.
A witness said he heard a number of shots, ran to his window “and a guy on a bike or moped rode off”.
“When I looked to the park, I could see a guy stagger then fall,” he added.
“That was it, then police came.”

Described by Mr. Kissi, a 31-year-old Ghanaian-American, as a celebration of lineage, it is meant to shine a light on the heterogeneity of Black culture and community, a richness of styles, aspirations and backgrounds that tend to go unrecognized or under-acknowledged by many Americans.
“We are as diverse and different as members of any other culture,†Mr. Kissi said. “We are not just trying to fit into the funnel of what most people would call a ‘white gaze.’â€
Mr. Kissi’s portrait is just one expression of the diversity being showcased this week in an online benefit auction (July 3 to 6) of some 80 works by Black photographers. Organized by See in Black, a photography collective founded by Mr. Kissi and Micaiah Carter, the works vary in style.
Highlights include Ibra Ake’s portrait of a boy who sits, stoically submissive, to have his hair razor-trimmed; Joshua Woods’s study of a rakish young man in a leopard coat; Adrian Octavius Walker’s close-up of a youth, his somber features contrasting startlingly with the bright pink du-rag on his head; and Dana Scruggs’s supple dancer, back arched in a balletic pose.
The show was conceived to support organizations including the Youth Empowerment Project, the Know Your Rights Camp, and the Black Futures Lab. But in a period of social upheaval and continuing racial protests, its deeper objective is to highlight photography as a tool for sociopolitical engagement.
“From the time I first picked up a camera, I felt the need to be proactive,†said Jamel Shabazz, the photographer who has lent his name and support to the event. “I wasn’t always out there protesting, but I believe in art as activism.â€
Mr. Shabazz is displaying a work of his own, a portrait of a young man and his dog on a Brooklyn stoop, two American flags behind him, one in the conventional red white and blue, the other in the red, black and green of the Pan-African flag.
“That image is very provocative,†Mr. Shabazz said. “It shows a sense of patriotism that’s not always seen in the Black community.â€
The need for social distancing has somewhat hampered his ability to catch his subjects’ humor and candor, and interfered as well with the personal interactions that have animated his portraits, documents of Black culture and community since the 1980s.
He has taken to the streets in recent weeks. “But photographing protests now feels very awkward for me,†Mr. Shabazz said. “People wear masks — I’m only seeing half their faces.â€
Masked, draped or turbaned, the photographers’ subjects nonetheless speak volumes through their style, their look deliberate and often frankly showy.
“If people are dressed well, they are more open to being approached,†Mr. Shabazz suggested. “They want to be seen.â€
Their costumes may memorialize a moment in time, or they may express a penchant for peacocking or a vibrant identification with a cultural heritage. Micaiah Carter said that his photograph of a woman in a white bandeau and fringed denim skirt was strongly influenced by his mother’s style in the 1990s, an amalgam of minimalist and urban influences with an Afrocentric overlay.
Yes, he shoots fashion, but Mr. Carter strives to imbue his pictures with a sense of permanence, a goal in line with the collective’s overarching mission.
“We hope to capture people not just during peak trauma moments but in their everyday lives,†Mr. Kissi said. “We’re so hyper-visible, but we’re almost never fully seen.â€
