KARACHI/LAHORE: The PPP-led government of Sindh on Sunday hit back hard against Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill, who has been criticising the provincial leadership since late last night.

Gill started throwing jibes at the Sindh government yesterday when he visited Jacobabad, commenting on the state of affairs of healthcare there. He reportedly only went to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital and chose not to check out the Jacobabad Institute of Management Sciences (JIMS).

In a comment, he said he was not invited to JIMS and that Sindh Information Minister Nasir Hussain Shah was “misrepresenting” facts.

“I wouldn’t have gone even if I was invited to [visit] the JIMS,” he said. The facility was built as a small specialised hospital with aid from the United States in 2013, but neither has an emergency or intensive care unit (ICU), nor is it a hospital you made”, he claimed, referring to the PPP.

Jacobabad, he stressed, only had one major medical facility called the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, which he went to and where he met a doctor in its emergency unit. Another was at home but returned upon hearing of his arrival, he added.

“There is only one hospital about which there have been reports, that its ambulances have broken down due to lack of use,” Gill mentioned, adding that he had videos as proof. He challenged Shah to join him for a debate on a live TV programme.

“The videos show patients under treatment in the general and gynecology wards. The hospital’s ER was open where one little girl patient was brought in front of me.

“Don’t engage in misrepresentation; there’s only one civil hospital in Jacobabad which is the DHQ,” Gill continued.

Humans ‘being treated like animals here’

Gill also struck down PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s comment on how hospitals in Sindh were the country’s best. “Bilawal sahab, the largest hospital in the Jacobabad district looks like a ruin.

“No country will have such a hospital even for animals like the one built here for humans. It’s impossible to treat any common ailment here, let alone the coronavirus,” Gill had stated, claiming that people were bringing patients in donkey carts and that piles of garbage were abound in the area.

He claimed that the hospitals in Balochistan were a great degree better than those in Sindh.

The premier’s aide said the PPP government’s actions are “limited to holding press conferences and issuing statements”.

“The nation will make a comparison and the nation will make a decision,” he had said, adding that the federal government was providing financial assistance, ventilators, and essential supplies throughout Pakistan.

“The federal government provided Rs40 billion to the deserving people in Sindh and reached 2.5 million families,” Gill said.

In a subsequent post on Twitter, in response to Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari reminding the government they had yet to respond to Bilawal’s challenge, the premier’s aide even remarked that “the Sindh family does not know Urdu”.

Bilawal had, a day earlier, challenged the government to point out even one hospital which matches the standards of healthcare provided by National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Karachi.

Gill should avoid making ‘deceitful’ remarks: Shah

Responding to Gill’s criticism of the healthcare in Sindh, Sindh information minister Nasir Hussain Shah reminded him that Bilawal’s challenge was related to the NICVD.

“Shahbaz Gill had gone to a relatively inactive hospital. Doctors there told him to go to the JIMS which had patients but he did not go,” the information minister said.

“There is also an NICVD unit at Jacobabad’s main hospital. Shahbaz Gill did not go there despite the invitation. He turned down the administration’s invitation to visit Jacobabad’s main hospital,” he added.

“The hospital in Jacobabad that Shahbaz Gill visited also has a coronavirus ward. If Shahbaz Gill had gone to Jacobabad’s main JIMS hospital, he would have been able to depict a truer picture,” he said.

Shah said most of the patients of Jacobabad’s civil hospital had been shifted to the 133-bed JIMS, which he said was a state-of-the-art facility. “Shahbaz Gill should avoid making deceiving comments when he comes to Sindh,” he added.

Gill ‘of no importance’

PPP lawmaker Abdul Qadir Patel also responded to Gill over his comments, saying: “Even [Prime Minister] Imran Khan is incapable of understanding Bilawal Bhutto’s words [and] Shahbaz Gill is of no importance.”

“Shahbaz Gill does not understand what NICVD means. Had he seen the NICVD in Sukkur, he would have been ashamed,” he said.

The MNA also lambasted the premier over the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT), saying the latter had “made it a source of income”.

“Imran Khan should hand it [SKMT] over to national custody,” Patel said.

‘Who does Shahbaz Gill think he is?’

Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh also defended the PPP saying that the former spokesperson of the Punjab chief minister had visited a hospital that had been shut down for the past five years.

“The JIMS was set up five years ago and the DHQ hospital has been shut down ever since. The JIMS is well-equipped with all the required facilities, has a modern cardiology hospital in it, and most of the DHQ’s staff has been transferred,” said Shaikh.

“PTI’s local leader in Jacobabad is well aware of the whole situation,” he said, adding that Gill’s method of gaining so-called “fame” was uncalled for.

The energy minister further noted that had the premier’s aide visited the JIMS, he would have known the ground realities.

The ruling PTI’s leaders “should not mislead the nation with videos of closed hospitals and schools”, he said.

“No facilities are available to patients in Punjab. Shahbaz Gill is engaging in political drama by going to Jacobabad,” he had said, adding that everyone knew Gill was “a guest” in the PTI government.

“Who does Shahbaz Gill think he is to challenge Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto? He is trying unsuccessfully to increase his political stature,” Shaikh had said.

PM Imran’s ‘vision’

Following his visit to the Jacobabad hospital Saturday night, in a press conference in Quetta, Gill said PM Imran had fought for justice for the past 24 years and that his “vision to combat the coronavirus became popular in the whole world”.

“The prime minister did a good job under difficult circumstances and pressure. The government of Sindh had adopted a complete lockdown but it did not become popular,” the premier’s aide said.

“The country’s strict lockdown policy on coronavirus has not been successful,” he had added. “What the leader sees is not visible to the common person!”

Fazlur Rehman to Akhtar Mengal: BNP-M’s exit from PTI coalition ‘a ray of hope’

0

JUI-F President Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed hope BNP-M chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal would convince other PTI allies that it was not the time to support the government. The News/via Twitter

ISLAMABAD: The BNP-M’s decision to break alliance with the ruling PTI government was “a ray of hope”, JUI-F President Maulana Fazlur Rehman said Sunday during a meeting with party chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal.

Mengal, whose party dealt a major blow to the federal government earlier this week when it broke coalition with the PTI over unfulfilled promises, said he had a personal relationship with Fazl.

“We’re together in the Opposition alongside the JUI-F in Balochistan,” the BNP-M leader said, adding that Fazl’s party was present throughout Pakistan.

In response to the JUI-F leader’s question on whether the Balochistan-based party had become part of the Opposition, Mengal said talks were ongoing.

“The rapprochement with the Opposition is growing. The day we join the opposition, we will run the right Opposition,” he said.

Fazl, following the meeting, said his party had welcomed Akhtar Mengal. The BNP-M’s decision to leave the government’s coalition “has birthed a ray of hope” and was “a model for other PTI allies”.

“Other allies in the government should now speak out boldly,” the JUI-F chief said, adding that following a person against one’s conscience was not the dignity of a respectable Pakistani.

“I hope Sardar sahab will convince other PTI allies that it’s not the time to support the government. Pakistan is drowning at the moment,” he added.

Fazl went on to comment on the country’s economic status and Prime Minister Imran Khan’s approval among the masses.

“When the budget goes negative so does the government’s popularity; the prime minister has no idea that his own popularity, too, has plummeted into the red territory,” he said.

“The current rulers’ popularity has crashed on the basis of his performance. The current ruler no longer has the right to impose himself [on the nation],” he said, adding that the incumbent premier must acknowledge his failure and resign immediately.

Amy Schumer dedicates Father’s Day post to single moms: ‘I love my dad but my mom did it all’

Amy Schumer is recognizing some unsung heroes this Father’s Day: single moms.

While the comedian frequently posts about her father, Gordon, and his battle with multiple sclerosis — and even used him as inspiration for her character’s dad in her hit comedy Trainwreck — it was her other parent who got a shout-out on Father’s Day.

On Sunday, Schumer shared a rare photograph of herself with her mother, Sandra. In her caption, the 39-year-old explained why she was honoring her mother, who has long been divorced from Schumer’s dad, and other single moms who carry the weight of solo parenting.

“More than anything, Happy Father’s Day to all the single mothers out there who did both,” Schumer wrote. “I love my dad but my mom did it all.”

Conveniently, she noted, her dad is not on social media.

Schumer’s post struck a chord with celebrity followers like Brandi Carlile and Cat Power. It also drew praise from fans who shared their own experiences of raising kids on their own.

“As a single mother, I appreciate this so much,” read one comment.

“I do it all. Not a lot of people recognize it,” added another single mom.

Schumer herself isn’t a single mother, and thus made sure to include a separate tribute to husband Chris Fischer, dad to her 1-year-old son Gene.

Pussy Riot member held by Russian ‘anti-extremism’ police

Russian state news agency Tass says a prominent member of the protest group Pussy Riot has been held by the police “anti-extremism” division.

The Mediazona website reported that Pyotr Verzilov was seized at his apartment by unidentified men who broke down the door on Sunday morning.

More:

Tass cited a police source as saying Verzilov was arrested as part of an investigation but did not report further details.

Verzilov publishes Mediazona. He attracted worldwide attention in 2018 when he and three other Pussy Riot activists entered the field of the World Cup final in Moscow to protest police brutality, an action for which they served 15 days in jail.

Two months later, he became severely ill from what group members suspected was poisoning and was flown to Germany for treatment.

Earth 2.0: Exoplanets that have similar characteristics to ours

0

It has recently been discovered that there is at least one Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone of a distant star, and more are being discovered all the time.

Not only is this an intriguing prospect, but there may also be an entire universe full of Earth-sized planets.

Since the 1990s scientists have discovered more than 4,000 “exoplanets” — although only a handful of these would possibly be habitable.

The exoplanets

It has been discovered that these said exoplanets orbit a variety of different stars from M-type stars (also known as red dwarfs) to sun-like G-type stars such as Tau Ceti.

Finding habitable planets involves finding “habitable zones” around stars where the conditions are optimal for life. That is to say, these planets are not too close, as they’ll be too hot, and not too far away from the star, as it’ll be too cold to sustain life.

The perfect balance

The first main ingredient for a suitable planet is water. In the Habitable zone around a star the planet would need to be the right distance and temperature for liquid water to exist.

This water would of course need to be able to pool. A rocky planet would be ideal for this.

So, the ideal candidate would be an Earth-sized, rocky world that is nestled in the habitable zone of a star.

40 billion planets

On 4 November 2013, astronomers reported, based on Kepler space mission data, that there could be as many as 40 billion Earth-sized planets orbiting in the habitable zones of sun-like stars and red dwarf stars within the Milky Way galaxy.

We have compiled a list of suitable exoplanets from the available data that are nearest — up to 50 light-years — from our solar system.

This list consists of the nearest planets and starts with closest planet and increases in distance up to 20 light-years from Earth.

Suitable exoplanets

Proxima Centauri b: This exoplanet is orbiting the habitable zone of the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, which is the closest star to the sun. This planet is located 4.2 light-years from Earth.

Barnard’s Star b: This exoplanet is a “super Earth” candidate and ice planet that orbits Barnard’s star in the Ophiuchus constellation. This planet is 5.958 light-years away from Earth.

Ross 128 b: This rocky exoplanet has been confirmed to be Earth-sized and orbits within the habitable zone of the Red Dwarf Ross 128 at a distance of 11 light-years from Earth.

Luyten b: The Luyten b exoplanet is most likely also a rocky planet. It sits in the habitable zone of the nearby Red Dwarf Luyten’s Star. This one of the most Earth-like planets ever found and is 12.2 light-years away.

Wolf 1061b, Wolf 1061c and Wolf 1061d: These planets orbit inside the habitable zone of the Red Dwarf star Wolf1061 in the constellation Ophiuchus and are all about 13.8 light-years away.

Gilese 876 d: This exoplanet is approximately 15 light-years away from Earth in the Aquarius constellation. At the time of its discovery it had the lowest mass of any known extrasolar planet besides the pulsar planets orbiting PSR B1257+12.

Gilese 682b: This planet is actually a red dwarf. It is dim with a magnitude of 10.95 and thus requires a telescope to be seen. It is located in the constellation of Scorpius, near the bright star Theta Scorpii. It has two candidate planets, one of which is in the habitable zone. It is located 16 light-years away from Earth.

Gilese 832c: This is an extrasolar planet locate in the Grus constellation and orbits the star Gilese 832 which is a red dwarf. It is located 16.6 light-years away.

Eridani b, Eridani c and Eridani d: These planets are actually stars that are located approximately 19.71 light-years away from Earth in the Eridanus constellation.

Gilese 581 e: This is an extrasolar planet orbiting within the Gilese 581 system. It is located within the Libra constellation and is about 20 light-years away from Earth.

Although the prospect of finding Earth-like planets is exciting and the discovery of such planets brings us closer to understanding the ins and outs of the universe, it will most likely be a while before further exploration will be possible regarding these planets.

Scientists definitely have their work cut out for them in the future, but that will not stop us Earth-dwellers from looking up and contemplating the stars.

SCCI demands early payment of income tax refunds

0

Peshawar             -        The Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Saturday demanded of the government and chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to release income tax refund payments without any further delay to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sector so it will help revive small businesses and industries, miserably hit by the corona lockdown, in the province.

The issue was raised in a meeting held at the chamber house, chaired by SCCI acting president, Shahid Hussain. Jalil Jan, vice president of the chamber, was also present on the occasion.

The meeting said despite clear directions of Prime Minister Imran Khan and commitment by FBR, the payment of income tax refund has not yet been made to the SMEs sector of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The meeting termed non-payment of income tax refund to the business community clear violation of Prime Minister’s order and federal finance ministry’s policy.

The SMEs are unable to meet their basic expenses and if FBR continued these delaying tactics, the business community will be pushed into economic meltdown and they will not be able to resurrect and recover from the economic depression, the meeting said.

The participants of the meeting warned that the business community will be compelled to start agitation and protest campaign for their own money in the shape of income tax refund.

Therefore, the meeting requested the government and FBR to release income tax refund payments immediately without any further delay.
