Robert E. Lee Statue Sleeps With The Fishes In Jim Carrey’s New Cartoon

Of the Confederate general, Carrey wrote: “Here’s to finding a more appropriate place for Robert E. Lee.”

The “Kidding” star shared the picture amid growing calls for the removal of monuments honoring racist historical figures.

Earlier this month, a statue of British slave trader Edward Colston did actually temporarily end up in a river in Bristol, southwest England.

Its toppling and tossing into the River Avon during a Black Lives Matter protest inspired the street artist Banksy to come up with a suggestion for its replacement.

Rare ‘ring of fire’ solar eclipse to cast shadow over Africa and Asia

0

Skywatchers along a narrow band from west Africa to the Arabian peninsula, India and southern China will witness the most dramatic “ring of fire” solar eclipse in years on Sunday.

Annular eclipses occur when the moon passes between Earth and the sun, but not quite close enough to our planet to completely obscure the sun’s light.

They occur every year or two, and can only been seen from a narrow pathway across the planet.

Sunday’s eclipse coincide’s with the northern hemisphere’s longest day of the year, the summer solstice, when Earth’s north pole is tilted most directly toward the sun.

The eclipse will be seen first just a few minutes after sunrise in north-eastern Congo-Brazzaville. This is the point of maximum duration, with the blackout lasting 1 minute and 22 seconds.

It will reach “maximum eclipse”, with a perfect solar halo around the moon, over Uttarakhand near India’s border with China just after midday. The exact alignment will only last for 38 seconds.

“The annular eclipse is visible from about 2% of the Earth’s surface,” Florent Delefie, an astronomer and the Paris Observatory, said. “It’s a bit like switching from a 500-watt to a 30-watt light bulb.”

People hundreds of kilometres on either side of the centreline across 14 countries will also see light drain from the day, but not the “ring of fire”.

“Good weather is the key to successful eclipse viewing,” the astrophysicist Fred Espenak writes on the Nasa Eclipse website. “Better to see a shorter eclipse from clear sky than a longer eclipse under clouds.”

There will be a second solar eclipse in 2020 over South America on 14 December, but because the moon will be a bit closer to Earth it will block on the sun’s light entirely. It will take less than 100 minutes to move across the continent.

Even if the day has darkened, looking at a solar eclipse with the naked eye is dangerous. Sunglasses, which do not filter out ultraviolet rays, do not offer any protection, Delefie said. “The sun is so bright that even when there’s only a tiny portion visible, it is still dangerous for the eyes,” he said.

China warns Taiwan against harbouring Hong Kong ‘rioters’

The Chinese government has warned Taiwan against offering protection to “rioters” from Hong Kong as international criticism grew of Beijing’s move to impose a controversial security law that bans separatism and foreign interference in Hong Kong.

In a statement late on Friday, China’s policy-making Taiwan Affairs Office denounced plans by Taipei to help those thinking of fleeing Hong Kong over Beijing’s tightening grip on the semi-autonomous city.

More:

“Providing shelter for and taking onto the island the rioters and elements who bring chaos to Hong Kong will only continue to bring harm to Taiwan’s people,” it said.

Taiwan, a self-governed island that has already welcomed scores of dissidents from Hong Kong, said on Thursday it will set up a dedicated office to “practically handle humanitarian relief and care” for Hong Kong people.

The new office begins operations on the sensitive date of July 1, the day Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule from Britain in 1997 with the promise of continued, wide-ranging freedoms under China’s “one country, two systems” formula.

Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong say those freedoms are increasingly under threat as Chinese legislators draft a national security law banning what it termed secession, subversion, terrorism and foreign interference in the global financial hub.

THE STREAM | Is Hong Kong’s autonomy dead? (24:50)

Details of the law are not known, but Beijing and Hong Kong officials say the legislation will only target a small number of “troublemakers” while leaving rights and freedoms intact.

The legislation followed months of protests in Hong Kong last year, with millions taking to the streets against another law that would have allowed residents of the city to be extradited to mainland China for trial.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen was one of the first world leaders to express support for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong when demonstrations erupted in June last year. Tsai’s moves have angered China, as Beijing also claims Taiwan as its own, with officials threatening to bring the self-ruled island under Beijing’s control by force if necessary.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has previously offered the “one country, two systems” formula to Taiwan, but Tsai firmly rejected the proposal in a speech on May 20 after being sworn in for her second term in office.

In its Friday statement, the Chinese government said the plots of forces advocating independence for Hong Kong and Taiwan, and those seeking to damage “one country, two systems” will never succeed.

Separately on Friday, the European Parliament condemned the Hong Kong national security law, with legislators calling on the European Union to take China to the International Court of Justice if it implements the legislation.

The parliament “believes that the EU should use its economic leverage to challenge China’s crackdown on human rights by economic means,” said the resolution, which passed with 565 votes in favour to 35 against.
The parliament’s resolutions are non-binding but the political signals they provide can steer European governments’ policy.

You Wenze, spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress, China’s parliament, expressed firm opposition to the EU resolution, which he said seriously distorted the facts and amounted to open interference in Hong Kong affairs, state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday.

The Chinese parliament’s top decision-making body had been reviewing a draft of the security legislation for Hong Kong since Thursday. An initial Xinhua report on the Standing Committee meeting said it ended on Saturday morning but made no mention of Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, the United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet also expressed concern over Beijing’s moves on Friday, saying that any laws imposed on Hong Kong “must fully comply with China’s human rights obligations” and international treaties protecting civil and political freedoms.

Hours later, China’s mission to the UN in Geneva said Bachelet’s remarks were “improper” and “grossly” interfered in its sovereignty and internal affairs.

Peter Sarsgaard has praised Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. Sarsgaard plays the supporting role of Gotham’s district attorney Gil Colson. He was earlier rumoured to don the role of supervillain Harvey Dent/Two-Face.

Sarsgaard told The Hollywood Reporter, “He (Robert Pattinson) looks amazing. I have to say, he really, really does. The work he was doing was really cool. I really dug his Batman, and I can’t wait to see it (on-screen). I think he’s a very interesting actor, and I loved him in the Safdie brothers movie (Good Time) that he did. And I actually really liked this one he just did, the comedy movie with Willem Dafoe. The Lighthouse. He’s just an interesting, interesting actor.”

Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, and John Turturro also play supporting roles of Catwoman, Commissioner Gordon, Alfred, Penguin and Carmine Falcone in The Batman.

Sarsgaard also revealed he is eager to go and finish the filming of the movie. “God, I’m just hoping that we can go back soon and finish shooting it,” Sarsgaard said. “It’s much harder with a big movie — to get back to it and finish it. It’s hard to even think about anything else with it. I’m about 80 percent done with my part, so I would just like to do the last 20 percent.”

The Batman was initially scheduled to be released on June 25, 2021 but due to filming delay amid the coronavirus outbreak, it was delayed to October 1, 2021

Islamabad police says cannot register case against Cynthia Ritchie

0

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad police refused to register a case against US citizen and blogger Cynthia Dawn Ritchie, who has accused the top PPP leadership of rape and harassment.

A report was forwarded from the Bani Gala police station to the additional sessions judge’s court in this regard. PPP leader Waqas Abbasi had submitted the plea against Ritchie for making inappropriate claims about former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in her tweets.

In the petition, it was mentioned that the US citizen posted defamatory tweets.

Police said that if any action is required against Ritchie, then the Federal Investigation Agency should be consulted.

The court then summoned final arguments from both sides in the next hearing and adjourned the case until June 24.

Earlier, police had dismissed the case filed by Ritchie against Senator Rehman Malik over lack of evidence.

On Thursday, Cynthia Richie had moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a bid to stop the FIA from registering a case against her.

In her petition, Ritchie had said that the FIA should be stopped from filing a case against her as she had not committed any crime.

In the previous hearings, Additional District and Sessions Judge (ASJ) Jahangir Awan had directed the FIA to register a case against US blogger.

In its two-page verdict, the court said the US blogger had not denied that she created this tweet on social media.

“A crime has been committed falling under PECA Act 2016 and FIA is competent to investigate the matter in accordance with the law. Under the circumstances, the application is hereby accepted and FIA is directed to proceed in accordance with law, conduct on inquiry and if there is sufficient material register an FIR,” the order read.

In a video message earlier this month, Ritchie had accused senior PPP leader Senator Rehman Malik of rape and said that the incident happened in 2011 when Malik was interior minister.

Ritchie had also alleged that two others, including former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gillani, had “manhandled” her at a separate occasion.

She had stated that the incidents occurred in 2011 when the PPP was in power, and when Malik had been a senior minister.

Fox News’ John Roberts Uses War Analogy To Describe Preparing For Trump Rally In Pandemic

0

Fox News’ John Roberts said he is taking all the “appropriate precautions” to cover President Donald Trump’s Saturday rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The conservative network’s chief White House correspondent ― who has called out Trump on previous occasions ― on Friday used a wartime analogy to explain how he was preparing to report on the indoor event at the 19,000-capacity BOK Center ― which multiple public health experts have warned could supercharge the spread of the virus.

“It’s like digging a slot trench to sleep in every night during the invasion of Iraq,” wrote Roberts, who embedded with U.S. troops to cover the 2003 invasion for CBS News.

“You take all the necessary steps to keep yourself safe,” he added.

The Trump campaign has faced widespread criticism over its decision to press ahead with the rally, for which it added a waiver to its website informing attendees they could not sue if they became infected at the event.

Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) has even urged people at high risk from COVID-19 to stay away. The confirmed number of coronavirus cases in Oklahoma is now rising at record levels.

Given Roberts’ combat comparison, many Twitter users questioned why the rally was being held at all.
