At least eight children were killed on Thursday after a landslide hit a mountainous area in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said.

A massive landslide hit the Martung area in Shangla district when between nine and 14 children were playing cricket, burying them underneath, Deputy Commissioner Hassan Abid said.

The children, aged between 12 and 14, were trapped under rubble from the landslide, Abid said, adding that one child is still missing.

Efforts are underway to track down the remaining child.
