Pakistan Witnessed 83 Percent Rise In Terror Attacks In August, Report Reveals – Times of India

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has witnessed a sharp 83 percent increase in terror attacks in the month of August, Geo News cited a report compiled by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and security Studies (PICSS).
The month of August saw a significant increase in terrorist attacks throughout the country; So far, 99 terrorist acts have been registered. According to the data, this is the highest number recorded in a single month since November 2014.
The data indicated a sharp 83 percent increase in August compared to July, as there were 54 attacks in the month. The PICSS report also mentions four suicide attacks, three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) tribal districts and one in mainland KP.
Meanwhile, in the month of July there were five suicide attacks, the highest number in a year. In total, the country witnessed 22 suicide attacks in the first eight months of 2023, in which 227 people were killed and 497 injured.
The PICSS data also shows that security forces responded effectively to the militant threat, preventing many attacks that killed at least 24 militants and arrested 69 others in various operations across the country, Geo News reported.
According to the report, the regions most affected by terrorist activity in August were Balochistan and the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
Balochistan saw a 65 percent increase in militant attacks, going from 17 in July to 28 in August, while FATA saw a 106 percent increase, going from 18 in July to 37 in August.
However, both regions had a 19 percent and 29 percent decrease in deaths, respectively. KP, excluding its tribal areas, had an 83 percent increase in militant attacks, from July 15 to August 29. Deaths and injuries increased 188 percent and 73 percent, respectively.
He Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its dissident organizations mainly attacked the province, claiming multiple attacks. Sindh saw a small increase in militant attacks, from three in July to five in August, Geo News reported.
Punjab province was largely at peace in August, with no extremist attacks reported. In July, the only attack was a low intensity explosion outside a police station in Lahore, which injured one person.
