A Pakistani-born doctor has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in the United States for trying to join and support the Islamic State group, officials said.
Muhammad Masood (31), a licensed doctor from Pakistan, had expressed his “desire” to carry out “lone wolf” terror attacks in the US and attempted to travel to Syria via Jordan in 2020 before his plans were thwarted by covid restrictions. the US Department of Justice said in a press release. He has been sentenced to 216 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
He added that Masood was working as a research coordinator at a medical clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on an H-1B visa when he used an “encrypted messaging app to facilitate his travel abroad” to join ISIS.

“Masood made multiple statements about his desire to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS), pledging allegiance to the designated terrorist organization and its leader,” the statement said.
“On February 21, 2020, Masood bought a plane ticket from Chicago, Illinois, to Amman, Jordan, and from there he planned to travel to Syria. On March 16, 2020, Masood’s travel plans changed as Jordan closed its borders to incoming travel due to the coronavirus pandemic. Masood then agreed to fly from Minneapolis to Los Angeles to meet with an individual who he believed would help him travel on a cargo ship to take him into ISIS territory,” he added.
He was arrested in Minneapolis-St. Paul by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and pleaded guilty to “attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization,” according to the statement.
