Pakistani Twitter Upset Over Javed Akhtar’s Comment ‘Urdu Belongs To Hindustan’, Calls It ‘Troublesome’

While launching an Urdu poetry album with the actor and his wife shabana azmi, Javed Akhtar emphasized the importance of the Urdu language and the role Punjab played in its growth. The veteran lyricist and screenwriter told the event that Urdu does not belong to Pakistan or Egypt, it belongs to ‘Hindustan’. His statement was met with disapproval from Twitter users in Pakistan, who criticized him for “giving problematic statements” against Pakistan. In the recent event, javed akhtar was quoted as saying by the ANI news agency: “Urdu does not come from anywhere else… it is our own language. It is not spoken outside of Hindustan… Pakistan also emerged after the partition of India, before it was just part of India. Therefore, the language is not spoken outside of Hindustan…” He further said, “Punjab has made a great contribution to Urdu and it is the language of India. But why did you leave this language For partition? For Pakistan? Attention should be paid to Urdu…”

Javed also said, “Before it was just Hindustan, Pakistan later seceded from Hindustan. Now Pakistan said Kashmir is ours… will you believe it? I think not. Similarly, Urdu is a Hindustani language and still is ( like this.) Nowadays “The new generation speaks less Urdu and Hindi in our country. Today, the focus is more on English. We must speak Hindi because it is our national language.”

What is this new mantak (logic) by Javed Akhtar?” A tweet also read: “It seems Indian lyricist Javed Akhtar doesn’t hold back when it comes to making problematic statements about Pakistan, its culture and its people.”
