The theme this year is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”.

Besides celebrating women’s achievements, the day also aims to raise awareness about women’s equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity and raise funds for female-focused charities.

The United Nations first celebrated International Women’s Day during International Women’s Year in 1975.

By 1977, the UN and its member states declared March 8 as an official day for women’s rights and world peace.

The day is being observed across Pakistan with different seminars, conferences and events in the country to highlight the significance of the role of women in society.
