Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts National Guard, is facing charges in a US military intelligence leak case.
Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts National Guard, made his first appearance in a United States court after being arrested in connection with a leak of classified Pentagon documents which has infuriated the US authorities.
Teixeira appeared in federal court in Boston, Massachusetts, on Friday, a day after FBI agents raided his family’s home in the small town of Dighton, about 18 miles (30 kilometers) east of Providence, Rhode Island.
He was charged with withholding and transmitting national defense information and willful withholding of classified documents, two offenses that could carry up to 15 years in prison, The Washington Post reported.
The federal judge ordered Teixeira to remain in jail. Court documents filed Friday showed the FBI had used Discord’s billing information to identify Teixeira.
Following his arrest on ThursdayUS Attorney General Merrick Garland said Teixeira had been arrested for the “alleged unauthorized extraction, retention and transmission of classified national defense information.”
The Air Force later said Teixeira joined the Air National Guard in September 2019. His official job title was “Cyber Transportation Systems Journeyman,” a role tasked with maintaining the underlying infrastructure of the Air Force’s “vast global communications network.”
Leaked classified documents at the center of the investigation were posted online at a social networking website in March and perhaps earlier, but they were not widely reported in the US media until last week.
Reporting from Washington, DC, on Friday, Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett said the arrest has raised “a lot of questions” about how the relatively low-ranking intelligence official was able to spread the information.
“Now when you have a top-secret security clearance in the United States, it’s not unusual to be able to have this kind of access,” he said. “But it gives you a lot of information.”
US media reported that Teixeira was the leader of a chat group on the Discord platform that was formed in 2020 and focused heavily on gaming, guns and religion.
It began releasing what appeared to be handwritten transcripts of military intelligence last year, a group member told The Washington Post. He later went on to post photos of the documents.
The investigative website Bellingcat has said that those photos began to be published in March, if not before.
The leak has disturbed the administration of US President Joe Bidenand Pentagon officials said they were reviewing their policies as they continued to investigate the scale and scope of what had been released.
Authorities have also repeatedly warned that at least some of the documents appear to have been tampered with and may be being used in disinformation campaigns by various actors.
The far-reaching documents contained American assessments of the war in Ukraine, painting a bleak picture that the fighting would likely spill over into 2023 and that Kiev’s air defense faced imminent shortages.
The intelligence also appeared to show the extent of US spying on some allies.
Among the apparent revelations, some of the leaked documents appeared to show that Egypt was planning to sell weapons to Russia in a deal it was intended to keep secret from the United States. A high Egyptian official has denied the report.
Another document apparently showed that Russian operatives were building a closer relationship with the United Arab Emirates, while a third indicated that South Korean leaders were hesitant to send artillery shells to Ukraine.
On Thursday, Defense Department spokesman Pat Ryder said his agency would not address details of the leaked documents because they had not been officially declassified.
