Perth public transport is free to celebrate Australia II

Public transport will be free in Perth to mark the anniversary of the day Australia II took the America’s Cup from the United States.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti revealed on Saturday that travel across the network would open on September 24.

Celebrations to mark the occasion will include a free concert and drone show at Victoria Quay in Fremantle.

Ms Saffioti said she, like many Western Australians, remembered Australia II’s victory in 1983. She also had clear memories of WA hosting the race when she arrived in Fremantle four years later.

“I remember very vividly the commotion around Fremantle,” he said. “Those my age will really remember it, and I’m sure the younger kids can also come and see what the America’s Cup win meant to Australia, WA and of course Fremantle.
