Perth’s Flame of Remembrance targeted by vandals

Western Australia police are hunting for the culprit who targeted the state’s most sacred war memorial over the weekend.

The Eternal Flame of Remembrance has burned continuously for 20 year as tribute to our fallen servicemen and women. On Sunday morning it went out.

Emergency services were called to Kings Park on Saturday night after reports vandals had extinguished the flame, which had been burning consistently since 2000.

RSLWA chief executive John McCourt described the act as “despicable”, and “appalling”.

“These people not only vandalised a memorial, they vandalised the memory of all those who served and died so we can have a free country,” he told 7 News Perth.

“It’s pretty disgusting.”

The flame was reignited Sunday morning by Kings Park staff.
