The plans for a multi-million-pound tropical indoor waterpark have been scrapped. Elysium Water Park was planned for Bournemouth and would have been the UK’s largest indoor water park, putting “Dorset on the map”. However, a number of factors, including delays and funding issues, meant that plans could no longer go ahead.
The £75 million waterpark was supposed to have swimming pools, waterslides, transparent flumes and rapids. It was also going to feature a £35 million lagoon surf park that would have been capable of producing over 2,400 ocean-like waves an hour.
For those not too keen on adventures, you would have been able to experience a “top quality wellness and beauty spa”, with it offering “a multitude of facilities including a sauna, hammam spas, massage and beauty treatments, exercise and dance options.”
It claimed: “Elysium will offer so much more than just the core waterpark experience, and will also incorporate another significant trend, the water-based spa aimed at 18+ age group.”
The incredible waterpark, set to open in 2023, was on track to become a destination that drew customers from across the UK. It even had plans for a 145-bedroom hotel and glamping site, making it the ultimate destination for weekend breaks too.
If it had opened, 500 jobs would have been created, too.
Construction work was expected to kick off in 2019. However, delays stemming from COVID-19 and funding issues put it on hold.
It had also been planned to be built in what is considered a green belt area (open land to prevent cities from extending too far). The site was also located near another site of special interest and lacked planning consent.
The project officially came to a halt when Elysium Water Park UK LTD was dissolved two years ago, according to Companies House.
