Police book Chandigarh resident for extortion, deceit

Mohali Phase VIII police booked a man on Thursday for allegedly extorting money from a resident of Sector 69. The defendant has yet to be arrested.

According to police, the complaints in the case were filed by one Piyush Sharma, a resident of Sector 69.

Sharma, the police said, had lodged two complaints with the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in September last year and January this year. DSP (cybercrime) carried out an investigation, after which it was FIR TREE was brought against one Jatin Chabbra, a resident of Sector 43, chandigarh. In one of his complaints, Sharma has stated that the defendant, Jatin Chabbra, was known to him and had borrowed Rs. 61.63 lakh from him under various pretenses.

Sharma alleged that later, when he asked Chabbra for his money back, the defendant began threatening him with dire consequences. Sharma has later claimed that Chabbra had extorted money from him by threatening him many times.

Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case against Chabbra under sections 384 (extortion), 386 (one who commits extortion putting any person in fear of death or serious harm), 420 (trap), 506 (criminal intimidation). and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
