Police offer $250k reward for information over fatal Sydney fire

A $250,000 reward is on offer for information regarding an alleged arson attack which killed an elderly Sydney man five years ago.

John Flamish, 81, died after a fire broke out in the ground floor car park of an Early Street unit in Parramatta on June 5, 2017.

Police deemed the fire deliberate but despite extensive investigations over the past four years, no one has been charged.

Flamish had been staying with a friend who lives in the complex and is believed to have been attempting to extinguish the fire.

Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said Flamish’s death is being re-examined.

“The (person or persons) involved in lighting this fire cost a much-loved father and friend his life – and it is time that they are held responsible for their actions,” Doherty said.

Five months after the fire, police released CCTV of a suspect and appealed for information in identifying the person.

The vision is being re-examined and police are now offering a cash reward to help with investigation.

Flamish’s daughter, Jenny Clarke, said her family would never give up in the search for those responsible for his death.

“My father was a retired and respected businessman who loved his family and life in general but was tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Clarke said.

“Ever since dad died my family has been dealing with immeasurable pain, and I am pleading with anyone who may know about the events which led to his death to come forward.”
