Polish President Andrzej Duda tests positive for coronavirus

Polish President Andrzej Duda has tested positive for the coronavirus but is feeling well, a senior official in his office said Saturday.

“The president yesterday was tested for the presence of coronavirus. The result turned out to be positive. The president is fine. We are in constant contact with the relevant medical services,” Secretary of State Błażej Spychalski said.

It was not clear where or when Duda became infected.

On Friday, he visited the National Stadium in Warsaw, which is being transformed into a field hospital, and later met with Polish tennis player Iga ÅšwiÄ…tek, who recently won the French Open.

Coronavirus infections have risen sharply recently in Poland. Authorities reported a new record of over 13,600 new infections and 153 new deaths on Friday. From Saturday, new restrictions come into force such as limiting gatherings to five people and a two-week shutdown of restaurants and bars. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Friday called on Poles to strictly observe these “serious restrictions” in order to protect lives.
