Vice President Kamala Harris’ favorability has grown among Democrats and independents since becoming a presidential nominee, according to a Gallup poll released Thursday.
The big picture: While Harris’ popularity grew 13 percentage points in August to 47%, former President Trump’s dipped 5 points to 41% as the two edge towards what’s expected to be a close contest in November.
- Meanwhile, President Biden’s approval rating has risen in the weeks since he left the race, likely due to Democrats’ approval of the decision, per Gallup.
By the numbers: Among U.S. adults, the favorable rating of Harris increased 13 percentage points since June, to 47% — second only to a 53% rating she received shortly after becoming vice president.
- Among Democrats, it went up to 93%. Meanwhile, 41% of independents and 5% of Republicans hold positive opinions of her.
- The vice president’s job approval rating is now at 47%, up 7 points from a previous reading in December. It has ranged from from 40% to 49% throughout her vice presidential term.
Zoom in: The findings are from an Aug. 1-20 poll conducted after Biden announced July 21 that he was ending his bid for a second term and mostly before the Democratic National Convention began Aug. 19.
- Results are based on a random sample of 1,015 adults living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
Zoom out: Biden’s job approval rating increased significantly in August, with a 7-point jump to 43%. Among Democrats, it’s up to 89%.
- His favorable rating went from 37% in June to 40%.
- At the same time, Trump’s favorable rating dipped five points to 41%.
What we’re watching: Harris’ nomination acceptance speech at the DNC Thursday, along with the Sept. 10 presidential debate, will be key in determining her favorability in the final months of the campaign.
