Popular baby product pulled from UK market over suffocation risk

The hazardous fold-out travel crib has been pulled from shelves following the alert issued to parents who may have already purchased the widely-used item.

A safety report concerning The New Mummy Crib Backpack, sold through Amazon, eBay, Fruugo, Joom and DH Gate, prompted the withdrawal of the product.

The item is a backpack that unfolds into a baby travel cot featuring “multiple compartments”.

The government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) issued the safety warning, confirming that the crib has been turned away at the UK border.

The OPSS describes the product as “not structurally stable” with “no warnings to indicate that it cannot be used overnight”.

The dangers highlighted reveal that despite being designed for babies to sleep in while on the move, there is no indication that it is unsuitable for overnight use, posing a significant suffocation risk.

Furthermore, a baby’s “natural movements” could cause the crib to collapse or tilt sideways if left in it overnight, potentially resulting in “serious injuries”.

“The crib is also supplied with a cover which would fully enclose and cover the baby, potentially leading to suffocation,” the report adds.

These failings mean the product does not comply with the requirements set out in the 2005 General Product Safety Regulations.
