Power returns to most of Brazil after widespread one-hour blackout

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Power returned to most of Brazil Tuesday afternoon after a massive blackout left much of the northern and northeastern regions without power for nearly six hours, the energy ministry said. from the country.

Small adjustments still need to be made in some cities, the ministry said on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

The blackout occurred at 8:30 am and also disrupted power supply in the southeast. At least 19 of Brazil’s states and the capital city of Brasilia were affected by the blackout, according to online news site G1.

The blackout also affected public transportation. Passengers had to evacuate metro lines in major cities, including Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Salvador. Traffic lights were out in other cities.

The cause of the blackout was under investigation.
