University leaders have been told to review their security and keep close contact with Jewish groups ahead of pro-Palestine marches.
Universities UK (UUK) has published guidance as students are set to take to the streets across the country.
The UUK, which represents more than 140 institutions, has asked university leaders to maintain close contact with Jewish student groups, review security arrangements and publicise mechanisms for reporting antisemitic incidents.
Vivienne Stern, chief executive of UUK, said: “We urge students and staff taking part in protests to be mindful that October 7 is an anniversary of a brutal attack on innocent people.
“It remains a day of grief and remembrance for many, including but not only Jewish people, many of whom are students and staff on our campuses.
“We therefore support the request by the Metropolitan Police to students planning to march in London on October 7 to consider holding this protest on another day.”
