Queen Elizabeth supports Black Lives Matter, says royal insider

Queen Elizabeth II is a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, according to a palace insider interviewed for a TV show.

Speaking on Channel 4 News’ “Black to Front” program, which will air on Friday, Ken Olisa, the queen’s first Black Lord-Lieutenant for London (the monarch’s representative in Greater London) said: “I have discussed with the royal household this whole issue of race particularly in the last 12 months since the George Floyd incident.”

Race is “a hot conversation topic,” said Olisa, according to a press release from Channel 4 News. “The question is what more can we do to bind society to remove these barriers.” The royals “care passionately about making this one nation bound by the same values.”

When asked if the palace supports Black Lives Matter, Olisa said: “The answer is easily yes.”

Olisa also said the palace sought his advice after the Grenfell Tower fire, in which more than 70 people died, and he feared that the queen would be booed if she visited the site, as happened to then-Prime Minister Theresa May and London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Olisa said he advised the queen to go: “I remember thinking as it all happened, it was quite scary, we didn’t know whether she would be booed or have things thrown at her etc and when she got out of the car all these people applauded.”
