Andy Burnham has only just become Prime Minister, but he is already facing one of the biggest tests of his premiership. One of his toughest challenges could be managing Britain’s relationship with US President Donald Trump, who remains one of the most unpredictable figures in world politics.

Sir Keir Starmer spent much of his time in office trying to build a working relationship with Trump, but not everyone believes that approach was successful. Mr Burnham has already struck a different tone on some international issues, leading to questions over how the two leaders will work together.

How Mr Burnham deals with Mr Trump is expected to be one of the biggest challenges facing his new Government.

During his time as Prime Minister, Sir Keir was often criticised by opponents who claimed he was too cautious in his dealings with the US President.

Supporters, however, argued he was trying to protect Britain’s interests and maintain strong ties with one of the UK’s closest allies during a period of growing international instability.

Some political commentators believe Mr Burnham now has a chance to take a different approach.

Former EU foreign policy chief Baroness Cathy Ashton said Mr Burnham should be clear about Britain’s position rather than trying to adapt his message to suit the White House.

Speaking to LBC, she said she did not believe Sir Keir was wrong to try to build a relationship with the Trump administration, but added that “we’ve seen the consequences of that”.

She also echoed advice reportedly given to Mr Burnham by former Barack Obama adviser Ben Rhodes, saying: “Don’t try to appease Trump. He’s a bully. Stand up for yourself.”

Others believe the situation is far from straightforward. Some commentators argue Sir Keir’s approach helped preserve relations with Washington at a time when Ukraine was relying heavily on Western support and Europe was increasing defence spending.

Another issue for Mr Burnham could be the appointment of Ed Miliband as Foreign Secretary.

Reports have suggested some figures close to the Trump administration are concerned about Mr Miliband’s previous criticism of the US President and his views on climate and energy policy.

However, former British diplomat Alexandra Hall Hall argued that the Foreign Secretary’s job is “to stand up for British interests”.

She said maintaining good relations with the United States remains important, but added that it “should not be at the cost of selling the UK’s own values and interests short”.
