More than a month after warning pilgrims against travelling without mandatory Chinese travel documents, the Centre on Thursday said it had received several requests for assistance from Indian citizens stranded in Nepal while undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through private tour operators.
In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had issued an advisory on June 27 asking pilgrims not to commence their journey from India until they had obtained all the required Chinese visas and entry permits for the pilgrimage.
The advisory came after many Indian pilgrims were left stranded in Kathmandu while travelling through private operators. The ministry had warned that beginning the journey without confirmed documentation significantly increased the risk of pilgrims getting stranded. The minister said the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu was assisting affected pilgrims.
