Renato Veiga makes Portugal debut

It’s been an international break of several firsts for Chelsea players already, with both Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson netting their first ever senior international goals for their respective countries, France and Senegal. Friday’s slate of games brought us yet another first.

This time it wasn’t a goal but a debut instead, as Renato Veiga made his first senior appearance for Portugal in a 3-1 win over Poland. Veiga, surprisingly, was deployed at center back by manager Roberto Martínez, but the 21-year-old performed admirably at this new position, playing alongside Manchester City’s Rúben Dias.

Pedro Neto also started and played the vast majority of the game. João Félix was an unused substitute.

Speaking of which, Marc Cucurella and Robert Sánchez both went as unused subs in Spain’s narrow 1-0 win over Denmark. The reigning European champions have now lost just once in the last 22 games, dating back 18 months.
