Report: Blue Jays offered Gausman deal; in contact with Brantley, Turner

Three weeks into free agency, chatter about the Toronto Blue Jays potentially being one of the most active teams on the market have yet to subside.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal added more fuel to that fire Monday, linking the Blue Jays to right-hander Kevin Gausman, who recently signed with the San Francisco Giants.

Per Rosenthal, before inking his new contract, Gausman was offered a three-year deal from Toronto, “believed to be in the $40 million range.”

Gausman ultimately signed a one-year, $18.9-million deal with the Giants, betting on his performance in 2021 to earn him an even greater deal next off-season.

He’s far from the only other name the Blue Jays have reached out to.

According to Rosenthal, Toronto has also been in contact with outfielder Michael Brantley and recent World Series champion third baseman Justin Turner, while the club remains interested in outfielder George Springer and infielder DJ LeMahieu.

MLB super-agent Scott Boras said last week he expects the Blue Jays to be among the most aggressive clubs in baseball this off-season.

“The Jays are what I’ve always hoped the Blue Jays should and could be, and that is that they’re going to be one of the organizations that sits atop the aggressive markets in baseball,” Boras said during an appearance on Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Writers Bloc on Thursday.

“They’re in a definite phase where I think they have the lamp and now they’re looking for the lightbulb.”
