Roman Abramovich hands over Chelsea FC ‘stewardship’ to trust

LONDON — Roman Abramovich has handed over the “stewardship and care” of Chelsea Football Club to trustees of its charitable foundation, he said in a statement on Saturday.

Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who has owned the top-tier team for nearly 20 years, said of the trustees: “I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”

His position has been under intense scrutiny in the U.K. following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On Thursday, Labour MP Chris Bryant told the House of Commons that Abramovich should have some of his assets seized, and questioned whether he should be allowed to operate a football club in the U.K.

Bryant used his parliamentary privilege, a legal immunity for legislators, to read out a leaked Home Office document which suggested the Chelsea Football Club owner should not be able to base himself in the U.K.
