Route 1 NJ traffic congestion relief project expands in Middlesex

The New Jersey Department of Transportation has approved another extension of the Route 1 congestion relief project, which allows a portion of the shoulder of the highway in North and South Brunswick to be used as a travel lane during peak travel times.

Starting Aug. 22, between 6 and 10 a.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m., motorists may use the shoulder as a travel lane for a 4 ½-mile stretch of Route 1 northbound and southbound from Route 522/Promenade Boulevard/Stouts Lane in South Brunswick to Thomas Avenue, just north of Finnegan’s Lane, in North Brunswick.

Use of the shoulder will be restricted at all other times, and trucks are not permitted to use the shoulder as a travel lane.
