Citing the statement made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Earlier, the country’s Sherpa, Amitabh Kant, however, reiterated that this is the age of diplomacy and not an age of war.

After holding an hour-long bilateral meeting with Russia on the sidelines of the second meeting of Sherpas underway in this picturesque village in Kottayam district, Kant said the world is facing many challenges post-COVID-19 pandemic and the G20 is responsible for addressing them.

“There is the challenge of the post-Covid impact of 200 million people being below the poverty line, there is the challenge of 100 million people having lost their jobs, there is the challenge of global debts, there is the challenge of of climate action; there is a recession challenge in a third of the economy, and there is a global debt challenge that impacts 75 countries in the world,” he said.

Kant said these are much bigger problems affecting the rest of the world, and “we work with all countries” to address them.

“After all, the only problem, the Russia-Ukraine problem, cannot contain many other problems,” he said.

In response to questions about the Russia-Ukraine war and its impact on G20 business, Kant said: “We are friends with all countries that are members of the G20.” “We openly raise our issues. They raise their concerns and we decided to discuss them further and move things forward.”

“We are still in the discussion stage with them. We have raised concerns about emerging markets, we have raised concerns about the developing world,” he said.

The Indian Sherpa also said that the war may have affected one part of the world, but there are many other problems for the rest of the world.

Kant expressed his hope that the Kumarakom meetings would bring “peace and serenity to all the delegates” who attend them.

He also expressed the hope that the “backwaters of Kumarakom will enable” member nations to meet the challenges of the world.
