Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page is retiring after 28 years of serving in the position.

He filed paperwork for early retirement on Thursday afternoon at the Rockingham County Governmental Center. He is running for a state Senate seat.

Page said his last day as Sheriff is July 31. He is the Republican nominee for North Carolina’s 26th District Senate seat.

He faces Democrat Steve Luking in the general election in November.
