Samantha Ruth Prabhu is one of the most prominent actresses in the Indian film industry. She has predominantly worked in Tamil and Telugu films. Over the years, she has earned a huge fan base with her outstanding performances. The actress is currently gearing up for the release of her upcoming film Shaakuntalam. Now, in a recent interview, the actress shared that she was not initially ready to play Shakuntala.

Speaking to Pinkvilla, the actress said: “I thought I didn’t look like Shakuntala. I thought I didn’t have Shakuntala’s grace and poise. But, this is a common trait with me over the past few years that I’ve (always feared) – for all the roles I’ve played (in the beginning I feel), ‘I can’t do it. I can’t do it. I just can’t do it.’ So I think this is a kind of trait that I fear, but then I face that fear.”

She added: “I think this is kind of an evolution of not only me as an actor but also me as a person. I fear every day, but somehow I deal with it and I think that all the characters I’ve done in recent years are characters I was afraid to play.”

Samantha continued to discuss the root of her hesitation and her doubts. “I don’t play characters that I usually do. There’s always a new character. There’s always a new part of me that I discover to play the character and the part that I don’t even know exists yet. So I think the hesitancy comes from there and it’s not that I have doubts about myself. But every time I talk about a new topic, I unlock a new part of me that I didn’t know existed,” said the actress.

Based on Kalidasa Abhijnana Shakuntalam’s acclaimed Sanskrit play, the film is written and directed by award-winning director Gunasekhar (Rudhramadevi) and produced by Neelima Guna and Dil Raju under the banner of Gunna Teamworks and Dil Raju Productions respectively. The film also features Dev Mohan as Dushyanta, the king of the Puru dynasty. ‘Shaakuntalam’ revolves around the epic love story of Shakuntala and King Dushyant, played by Sufiyum Sujatayum’s Samantha and Dev Mohan respectively. It will be released in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. The film will be released on April 14, 2023.
