Satya Nadella says strong leadership is required to mitigate the dangers of AI

“We definitely want the benefits of this technology and we want to mitigate the unintended consequences,” Nadella said in the interview. “The leadership that is required and the coming together of all parties that is required is a challenge, but it has to be done.”

Following the launch of ChatGPT in November, lawmakers and developers have been scrambling to regulate its use and that of other similar AI systems. The potential for misuse and abuse of technology has raised ethical and legal concerns. But despite attempts at regulation and even absolute bansthe pace of AI development has been extremely fast, with people like Microsoft and Google investing billions in its development.

Nadella added that while AI development is happening quickly, it is moving quickly in the right direction, and humans continue to play an important role in the process. “Humans are in the loop versus being out of the loop. It’s a design choice that, at least, we’ve made,” she stated.

However, while people remain an integral part of the process thus far, Nadella acknowledges that the real displacement can occur in the labor market. Although, this can be offset to some extent as AI will also help create new jobs.

“I mean, there may be a billion developers. In fact, the world needs a billion developers,” he said. “So the idea that this is actually a democratization tool to make it easier to access new technology and new knowledge so that the acceleration of the learning curve is easier.”

Along the lines of a previous interview where Nadella predicted that AI will benefit education, reiterated here that children will have access to an “AI tutor” that will break down information and remove the fear of learning. He added that while humans will continue to drive critical thinking, there is an opportunity to take advantage of new tools.

“Steve Jobs had this beautiful, beautiful line, right, which is ‘computers are like bicycles for the mind,’” Nadella concluded. “Now we have an upgrade, we have a steam engine for the mind.”
