Huge queues are building on the M6 after a crash and vehicle fire have closed part of the motorway. The M6 in Greater Manchester/Merseyside is closed in both directions between J23 (Newton Le Willows) and J24 (Ashton In Makerfield) due to the collision that resulted in the blaze.
All emergency services attended the scene and diversion routes are in place. The road was first closed just after 10.20pm on Sunday and remains shut as of 6am on Monday, October 19 with a diversion route in place.
A National Highways spokesperson said: “A Police collision investigation is currently underway and is expected to continue for several further hours. Following completion of the investigation, recovery agents will remove the vehicles involved.
“The carriageway road surface will then be assessed for any damage. There is currently no estimated time of when the road will re-open.”
