Actor sharad kelkar he recalled his first day working on the first big film of his career, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He said that, having only worked on television shows until now, he was amazed at what he perceived as sheer waste on set. But, he said, he later realized how vital extravagance was to Bhansali’s vision.
The actor appeared on Cyrus Broacha’s podcast, where he discussed his struggles in the film and television industry. He said that even though he was making a lot of money on television, he was interested in the respect that making movies would bring him.
Sharad recalled: “One of my first movies was Ram Leela. The set was at Film City, and on my first day there, there was a crowd of 1,000 people in the studio, plus the crew, plus the lead actors. We had more than one day of rehearsals. Mere dil pe lag raha tha kitne paise waste ho rahe hain, kitne paise waste karenge yeh log, itne mein toh main 13-15 minutes shoot kar leta (I thought they were wasting so much money that I could have shot 15 minutes of footage.) It was a surprise for me, because I come from television”.
Asked if he really thought they were wasting their time, Sharad said: “Not really.” He continued: “Once I finished the movie and saw it at the screening, I went out and hugged Sanjay, sir. I said, ‘Now I know the meaning of the great movie.’ Because he was used to getting the job done quickly. With movies, you need to take your time. I will give it to Sanjay, sir, because he is one of the few filmmakers who spends time on all aspects of cinema.
Protagonist deepika padukone and Ranveer Singh, Ram Leela was a blockbuster and the first of Bhansali’s three collaborations with the two stars. His last movie was Gangubai Kathiawadistarring Alia Bhattand will soon direct the pilot for his Netflix series Heeramandi.
