Sidney Powell joins the request for a speedy trial in the Georgia electoral case

Sidney Powell, former attorney for the former president donald trumprequests a speedy trial in the Georgia election interference case following co-defendant Kenneth Chesebro.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee set Chesbro’s trial date for Oct. 23, two months from now, after he filed papers requesting a speedy trial earlier in the week.

The judge has yet to approve Powell’s request, filed Friday night. Like Chesebro, Powell is accused of violating Georgia’s racketeering law by promoting a plot to round up “alternative” voters.

McAfee previously said the October date only applied to Chesbro, not Trump, who said in court documents that he definitely did not want to join the group seeking a speedy trial.

All defendants are expected to receive a large amount of evidentiary material in the discovery process; His lawyers have been asked to provide USB drives with capacity for at least two terabytes of data by September 5. They are expected to review the material before trial.

Chesebro’s request surprised this week. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had previously said her goal was to try the 19 defendants by early March 2024, an ambitious start date.

However, in response to Chesebro, Willis said his office was ready to bring the 19 defendants to trial as early as October.

Kay Levine, associate dean of the Emory University School of Law, told CNN on Saturday that she believed Chesbro’s request was an attempt to uncover Willis’s bluff, and her response was, in turn, an attempt to uncover the Chesebro lighthouse.

However, Powell and Chesebro could gain from parting ways with Trump, the most notorious defendant, Levine said.

Powell made a name for himself after the 2020 election by helping Trump push through accusations of voter fraud. He likened a lawsuit he was working on to a “Kraken.” after the mythical sea monster – and said he would “unleash the Kraken” to reverse President Joe Biden’s election victory. The lawsuit did no such thing.
