The minority cell’s chairman, KK Shahul Hameed, said those guilty of the murders of three young Muslim men should be charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), after proper re-investigation.

The minority cell of the Dakshina Kannada district of the Congress has demanded a new investigation by a special investigation team (SIT) into the “communal” enmity killings in the district last year.

In a letter to Chief Minister Siddramaiah through Karnataka Assembly Speaker UT Khader, who represents Mangaluru, minority cell KK Chairman Shahul Hameed said the culprits behind the murders of three Muslim youths should be charged. under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), after proper reinvestigation.

Hameed said that all communal killings in the district should be reinvestigated and a SIT should be formed for that purpose. Compensation should be provided to the relatives of Muslim youths along the lines of financial support given to the family of slain BJP youth wing leader Praveen Nettaru, he said.

Welcoming the decision to reinstate Nettaru’s wife to government work, he said relatives of the families of the slain Masood, Fazil and Abdul Jaleel in the district should also be given jobs.

Relatives of the three victims also demanded compensation, saying the previous BJP government had discriminated against the families of young Muslims who were killed over communal enmity.

Masood from Kalenja in Bellare, Mohammed Fazil from Mangalapete in Surathkal and Abdul Jaleel from Katipalla were reportedly killed last year by right-wing Hindu activists.

Masood was attacked at Kalenja in Bellare, a week before Nettaru’s assassination on July 26, 2022. He succumbed to his injuries on July 21. The then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had visited Nettaru’s residence on 28 July. On the same day, Mohammed Fazil was fatally attacked in Surathkal.

Abdul Jaleel was hacked to death at Krishnapura, Katipalla in Surathkal on December 24, 2022.

Fazil’s mother, Saramma, said representatives of the previous government had not visited their homes or offered them any compensation.

Fazil’s father, Umar Farook, said his son was killed to avenge Nettaru’s death and he is waiting for justice.
