Sky News interrupted for breaking Trump announcement

Sky News ground to a halt as the network cut to the White House for breaking news as U.S. President Donald Trump made new announcement from Washington D.C. alongside the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 47th President welcomed 2024 World Series champions to the White House on Monday (April 7) where he congratulated the organization on its eighth baseball championship. The Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in five games in last year’s World Series.

The tradition of sports teams visiting the White House dates to 1865, when President Andrew Johnson welcomed two amateur clubs. In 1869, President Grant welcomed the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds. President Trump congratulated the team as he introduced a series of sporting and political bigwigs in attendance at the event. He did spark rapturous laughter from the room with a cheeky dig just minutes in, saying: “we have a few senators here too but I don’t really like them so much, so I won’t introduce them.”

As he continued speaking, he was forced to stop due the laughter that filled the room, before pausing and joining in on the comedic moment with an agreeable laugh.

Didgers star Betts previously declined to go to Trump’s White House in 2019 when the Red Sox were invited to celebrate Boston’s big 2018 World Series win and there had been many in the MLB world wondering if he and some of his Dodgers teammates might forgo the trip again this year.

But critics slammed the president for hosting this “chipper” reception, claiming it was not representative of the wider mood given the current “economical political turmoil”

President Trump today also threatened to impose an additional 50 percent tariff on China, escalating the tit-for-tat retaliation with Beijing that followed the White House’s sweeping import tax rollout last week.

“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.

China was a primary target of Trump’s sweeping “Liberation Day” tariffs announced last week.

Beijing immediately slammed Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs, responding with 34% tariffs on U.S. imports, equivalent to the import taxes Trump levied against China last week.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is set to meet with President Donald Trump today at the White House, marking his second visit since January.

The leaders are expected to discuss Trump’s new tariffs on Israel, the war with Hamas and other key issues. The top White House adviser said it will be Trump’s first in-person meeting with a foreign country to negotiate the tariffs announced last week.

Trump urged patience and defended the state of the US economy. With the administration being accused of “sending mixed signals” on whether his trade policies are open for negotiation, fears of a global recession are mounting.

the president of the European Commission said: “The European Union is ready to negotiate with the U.S.” and has offered to scrap tariffs on industrial goods.
