Sledgehammer-wielding gang plead guilty after £225,000 jewellery shop raid

It followed Robert Clarke, 50, of Lever Lane, Rochford, and Lee Ramsey, 46, of Hastingwood Road, Harlow, both entering guilty pleas at the same court on Friday, May 22.

All three will be sentenced on Friday, July 24, and are currently all remanded in custody.

The robbery was captured on camera and widely circulated online.

The men were seen smashing the jeweller’s window using a sledgehammer on Paved Court in Richmond on Saturday, January 31.

They proceeded to steal an estimated £225,000 worth of jewellery before fleeing the scene.

An extensive review of CCTV footage was carried out by specialist officers, who also conducted forensic analysis.

Officers were also able to recover a vehicle believed to be linked to the robbery.

Using those clues, the police were able to track down the gang who were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.

The Met Police says neighbourhood crime dropped by 15.6 per cent in the last financial year, the equivalent of 40,000 fewer offences.

Theft from person dropped 21.4 per cent, vehicle crime 13.9 per cent and personal robbery 13 per cent.

Detective Superintendent Dan Mitchell, from the Met’s Flying Squad, said: “Robberies of this kind cause real concern for residents and businesses in the communities that are targeted.

“It’s they who feel the immediate impact.

“These guilty pleas mark a significant step in what has been a detailed and determined investigation.

“I hope they demonstrate our commitment to tackling smash‑and‑grab robberies in London by going after those involved, wherever they are.

“The groups responsible should be under no illusion – we will pursue you relentlessly and hold you to account.”
