Some Bad News About Leveling Up To 100 In ‘Diablo 4’

There was a philosophy about Diablo 3 in the past, that the real the game didn’t start until the max level, which was 60, then increased to 70 after its first expansion.

Diablo 4 now caps that at 100, and while that may be a long-term goal for some players, before you establish it firmly in your mind as something you want to hit can I want to know this next part.

Diablo 4 is becoming old school MMO/ARPG with the way the XP scaling works as you progress through the higher levels. What that means in practice is that:

  • The time and XP needed to get to level 85 is half the time and XP needed to get from level 85 to level 100.
  • And it increases even more. Level 92 is halfway to level 99 by the same metrics.

This is why, out of millions of players, there are more like thousands who have reached level 100, and why it took forever for hardcore gamers to get even 1,000 total players to level 100 (I’m not even sure after they have reached level 100).

You too can do it for sure, but at a certain point you might want to pause or maybe head into a new class around age 85 when this really starts to pick up. Sure, those paragon points are nice, but the gear you get at almost any level in World Tier 4 can theoretically be the same gear you’re wearing at level 100, so you’re really just fighting for nothing more than min- max those last 15 levels, and the vast majority of your build is probably set by then. Sure, 60 more model points is great, but again, 85 may be enough for some people, given the time investment it will take to track down those last 15 levels.

If you want to get to 100, you might want to wait until a next update that will increase the XP awarded specifically for Nightmare Dungeons, as Blizzard knows they’re not exactly the most efficient source of XP, which isn’t a good thing considering how essential by the end of the game they are supposed to be. In addition to a new system that will allow you to teleport directly into the Nightmare Dungeon instead of having to run there, increasing efficiency, the actual XP per monster is also increased within those dungeons. I don’t remember if that’s happening in a pre-season 1 patch or during the season 1 patch, but it’s soon.

As for me, I’ve been through a bit of ADHD in terms of just focusing on one character. My barbarian is 72, my rogue is 56, and my druid is 32. I keep switching to diversify the game, so 85 let alone 100 is probably a year long project at least for these guys. But I can continue to only work on them instead of seasonal characters, which doesn’t really appeal to me. But do what you want with your own leveling time.
