Sony reveals UK TV prices for 2023

Sony has unexpectedly decided to post launch pricing details (and open pre-orders) for some key models on its latest range of televisions in the UK ahead of the rest of the world. And some of the prices, at least, make for interesting reading.

The first thing to say about today’s Sony reveals, though, is that they don’t include a price, or an availability date, for its much-anticipated A95L range, with its Quantum Dot OLED technology. I will provide an update on these as the information is released.

However, the models covered by today’s announcement from Sony include its premium X95L Mini LED range, its latest A80L ‘traditional’ OLED TVs, as well as some of its budget LCD models. So there’s enough for us to get a good idea of ​​where Sony’s price is headed this year.

Starting with the OLED A80L range – or, at least, the ‘derivative’ A84Ls that will be a store-specific variation on the core A80L model – we have the 55-inch XR-55A84L at £2,399, the 65-inch for £2,999. , the 77-inch model for £4,499 and the 83-inch model for £5,499. Comparing size for size to LG’s C3 series, the 55A84L is £300 more, the 65A84L is £200 more, the 77A84L is £500 more… although oddly enough, based on the single UK price for the C3 from ’83 inches that I can find at the time of writing, the 83A84L is actually a full £1K CHEAPER than its LG counterpart.

Based on evidence from years past, the A84L series may be slightly more expensive, at least at launch, than regular A80Ls. But it still looks like Sony fans are going to pay a bit more for the brand’s new WOLED offering.

Next we have X95L mini LED kits. The 65-inch XR-65X95L is £2,799, the 75-inch model is £3,699, and the 85-inch model is £4,899. Without knowing such details at this stage about key specs, like how many local dimming zones they might be using, it’s hard to know exactly what to reference the X95L against. If we compare with Samsung’s QN90C mini LED models, which sit a notch below Samsung’s premium QN95C range, we find that the 65-inch Sony model actually costs £300 less than Samsung’s 65QN90C, Samsung’s Sony X95L The 75in costs £300 less than the Samsung 75QN90C and the 85in Sony X95L costs £900 less than the same size Samsung QN90C.

We need to get to Samsung’s QN85C range, which has fewer dimming zones than the QN90Cs, before we get to a point where Samsung drops the price of Sony’s Mini LEDs by £100-£200 depending on the size of the screen. All of this could suggest that the Sony X95Ls are great value, depending on what we find when we can dig into their specs.

Next we come to Sony’s X90Ls: non-mini LED TVs that use a premium full array with local dimming arrangement (FALD). Pricing for these has been revealed as £1,599 for the 55-inch, £1,899 for the 65-inch, £2,699 for the 75-inch, £3,499 for the 85-inch and £8,999 for the 98-inch. The 85-inch price is arguably the most interesting in terms of value.
