On 27 April 1994, long queues formed outside the polling stations for South Africa’s first free and democratic elections. More 62% of voters cast their vote for Nelson Mandela. The African National Congress (ANC) candidate, who had been released in 1990 after 27 years in prison, became the country’s first black president.
