South Africa Mine Sit-In by Protesting Staff Enters Third Day


An underground sit-in by staff at a South African platinum mine entered a 3rd day Friday, with workers saying they’ll stay underground till their calls for are met.

The sit-in at Wesizwe Platinum Ltd.’s Bakubung operation northeast of Johannesburg began on the morning of Dec. 6, with about 280 workers collaborating. On Friday, about 28 staff with continual sicknesses returned to the floor, however the remainder stay underground, the Nationwide Union of Mineworkers stated in an emailed assertion.
