El Periódico de Catalunya criticises the idea of electoral alliances on the right and left:
“The withdrawal of the [PP] Senate candidates in three provinces is a departure from one of the party’s founding principles: that of presenting itself under the same name throughout Spain, with the exception of [the former Kingdom of] Navarre. Yet the PP is willing to make this sacrifice for the sake of winning the battle for the Senate. … The ‘understanding’ between Vox and the PP mirrors the agreement between PSOE and [the left-wing coalition] Frente Amplio, which are running on a joint list for the Senate in 46 provinces. … After almost 50 years of democracy, the parties now seem to have found a purpose for what was originally intended to be the body of territorial representation that reflected Spain’s diversity.”
