State tehsildars, naib tehsildars go on strike

More than 3,000 tehsildars, naib tehsildars and deputy district collectors in Maharashtra have gone on indefinite strike to demand a grade-based pay scale. The new agitation occurs days after the strike of state government employees in demand of the Old Pension Regime (OPS).

“Naib tehsildar is a grade II position, but they are not given an identical pay scale. We have been following the matter with the state government since 1998. In 2014, the lawsuit was approved in principle but then dropped,” said Suresh Bagle, Acting Chairman of the Maharashtra State Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar Organisation.

Nearly 2,200 naib tehsildars, 650 tehsildars and 250 deputy district collectors went on strike.

The organization had called for a strike on March 1, after which the government informed it on March 13 that the state Finance Minister, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, had informed the Chief Minister eknath shinde and Chief Deputy Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the finance portfolio, on approving the lawsuit. The government had asked the organization not to go ahead with the strike as it was seriously considering their demand.

“The issue has been pending since 1998 and it was only after our strike call that the government said it was seriously considering the lawsuit. This is one of the simplest and smallest demands that the government can easily approve,” Bagle said.
