Steelers rookie Payton Wilson being evaluated for a concussion

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie inside linebacker Payton Wilson exited Saturday’s Week 2 preseason matchup against the Buffalo Bills after being evaluated for a concussion, Steelers Senior Director of Communications Burt Lauten announced.

Wilson, a third-round pick, has shown some impressive flashes throughout training camp and the preseason, showcasing his burst and speed, popping off the screen at times.

Despite a long list of accolades in his collegiate career, Wilson fell to the third round reportedly due to medical concerns, including two knee injuries and a season-ending shoulder injury in 2021. However, the Steelers’ medical team gave GM Omar Khan the go-ahead, and the team selected him with the No. 98 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

In his final season at NC State, Wilson earned the Butkus Award for best linebacker and the Bednarik Award for Defensive Player of the Year, in addition to his unanimous Consensus All-American honors. He led the ACC with 109 total tackles in 2023 and ranks fourth in ACC history with 48 career tackles for a loss.

Wilson may not be a starter just yet, but luckily, the Steelers have two outstanding options at Inside linebacker working ahead of him in free agent signing Patrick Queen and Elandon Roberts.
