MADISON (WKOW) — The ongoing war in the Middle East has struck a chord with college students across the country and here in Madison.

According to the Enclave’s Health Ministry, more than 34 thousand people have been killed from Israeli attackes in Gaza, as the war now surpasses more than 200 days.

On Thursday dozen of college students gathered to listen to a open panel discussion with individuals who have been personalyl impacted by the war. The event orgazied by ‘Students for Justice in Palestine’ – a student run campus group, aimed to provide a safe and supportive environment for those affected to open up about their stories.

“Taking these demostrations to the college campuses, which have been the heart of social change throughout American history, gives me hope that we can make a movement towards justice for Palestinians,” said Dahila Saba, who is a graduate student at UW-Madison and member of the Students for Justice in Palestine group. “A lot of the time these stories feel very detached from us in the US, and it’s really important to humanize these narratives to show that these aren’t, selected stories in the media that are exemplary,” she added.

Throughout the discussion, participants recounted memories of lost family members and shared the ongoing struggles faced by those seeking shelter in Gaza. Despite the grim realities, the gathering concluded with a sense of hope for an end to the war and a call to action directed towards lawmakers.

“It inspires me to be honest, I think this younger generation is realizing that our political leaders have failed to not only fail to stop this but have actively supported this,” Saba reflected.

Students for Justice in Palestine at UW-Madison have vowed to continue hosting similar events until they feel their voices have been heard.
